Krampus

See the traditional “Krampus” first up by spending time in the “Krampus sheds”. Learn about this tradition dating back to pre-Christian times and get the chance to hold a hand made mask and see how much work is put into the process of getting them perfected. Pick up a Krampus coat and bells and imagine the weight being carried around during such a Krampus run. How about getting dressed in one of the outfits?

Sauris

Sauris or Zahre in the local language, can be reached via the narrow, green Lumiei valley, which is dominated by the Dolomite summits that are reflected in the waters of the lake that changes colour according to the season.

This “pearl” in the Alps, rich in malghe (shepherd’s huts) and pastures, is situated between 1000 and 1400 metres above sea level. History suggests that this German-speaking community was founded by farmers coming from Austria, who brought skills and customs of their land of origin.

Given the seclusion and the difficulties of connection with the bordering towns Sauris has kept its traditions both in the language – a German dialect – as well as in culinary and architectural aspects.
